Bed Care Guide
Before delivery
Please make sure that you have a washable mattress protector ready to use on your new mattress, this avoids stains and smells and will keep your mattress in perfect condition. A new set of pillows will also compliment your mattress and a good night's healthy sleep.
If you are only purchasing a new mattress, remember placing it on an old base can be false economy. Always ensure that the base is going to compliment the mattress - a hard top base will make a soft mattress feel firm.
Upon delivery
Always read all of the manufacturer's care guides as well as the labels attached, which explain the individual characteristics and care requirements of your bed.
After unwrapping your bed from its packaging, leave it uncovered for a few hours to allow any condensation or odour to escape. Carefully dispose of the protective polythene covers as they can pose a danger to small children.
Initially, your mattress may be slightly shorter and narrower than the base as it may have contracted in transit. Once in use it will settle to its correct size.
Always use a clean, washable mattress protector before fitting your bed linen.
At first your new bed may feel strange to sleep on as the chances are that the springs and fillings on your old bed were not what they used to be. It takes time for your body to adjust to a new level of comfort and support, and also for the new fillings to settle.
Taking care of your new bed
- Never fold or bend the mattress, as this will distort the spring unit.
- Modern spring interior mattresses can not be rolled for storage.
- You should not sit on the edge of your mattress for long periods as this can distort its shape.
- Never stand or jump on the mattress, as this will break down the internal construction, and can cause the mattress to collapse.
- Always ensure that the legs and castors of the bed are fully tightened and continue to check them from time to time.
- Use the mattress handles and make sure there are always two people when moving and turning it.
- Only use storage drawers in divan beds to carry light weight items such as pillows, duvet, and bed linen. Never overload them with heavier items as this could cause them to collapse or distort the drawers.
Regular, easy-care maintenance
- Turn down your bed clothes every morning to allow the mattress to cool down and breathe.
- When changing bed linen, brush the mattress with a soft brush, never vacuum it.
- Unless it states otherwise, turn your mattress every fortnight for the first six months. After that, turn it at least every four weeks. Stick to a routine where you turn first end-to-end, then upside down in regular rotation. For mattresses with a combination of spring tensions, you will have to change sides unless you turn them over from head to foot. Some mattresses are described as "no need to turn". This means turning is not a regular requirement. We still recommend that you do turn and rotate from time to time. Others are described as "non-turn". This means there is no need to flip them over, but you should still rotate them from head to foot regularly.
- As the mattress is designed to shape to the contours of your body, settling of the fillings is quite normal. Turning the mattress will help keep the fillings supportive, as well as reduce natural dips and nesting.
Cleaning
- Treat stains and spillages immediately, they should be mopped up with a clean, dry white cloth. Don't saturate the fabric, and never use detergent or a hard brush, as this could damage the fabric or stitching.
- Always allow the mattress to air dry gently, away from direct heat.
- Regularly clean your bed with a soft brush to keep it fresh, paying particular attention to any tuft buttons, as dust tends to settle there.
