How To Make Your Home Warmer

“Who wouldn’t want to design a room that feels like a warm hug?”
– Athena Calderae, EyeSwoon

With the days getting shorter and the temperature starting to drop, it’s the time of year when we get to head indoors, get comfortable, and begin to enjoy all of our home comforts.

As the chilly seasons roll in, transform your home into a cosy and welcoming abode with our cosy edit which gives you all the advice you need on making your home feel that bit warmer, whilst giving you the latest interior tips.

Research has shown that our homes have not only a direct influence on our moods, but our overall health and well-being.

Colour Scheme

The fashion for this year is things warmed up.

Shades of brown, caramels, which play with deep neutrals for a rich, elegant and timeless space.

Think rosy plums and terracotta, cognac and burnt umbers, all used in soft Italian leathers and fabrics.

Team with nature inspired pieces of furniture, organic, imperfect stoneware terracotta and marbles and sculptural curved furniture with soft shapes.

Walls can be warmed up with soft tones of Venetian plaster effects and apricot tones with salmon hues.

Adding Texture

Soft furnishings can elevate the cosiness of a room.

Layering your sofa or bed with blankets and cushions can help you to snuggle up with a good book by adding softness and texture.
Soft and plush textures help create the perfect nest to hibernate in. Think faux fur, velvets or boucle fabrics.

Accent details like cushions and throws will give your space character and enhance the ambience that you wish to create and can be strategically placed to also add support to a sofa or a bed.

You can add pops of colour or co-ordinate your cushions with your existing décor.

Warmer Flooring

You can further enhance soft furnishings with a rug.
Adding a pop of colour with a rug can help add warmth to the room.

Again, think plush and soft textures. Having a rug on a laminated floor for example, will help to make certain areas warmer so it isn’t as cold to walk on.

One thing that might get overlooked with flooring is the underlay. Underlay is a vital part of carpeting any room. It not only reduces heat loss and in turn, energy bills, but it also protects the carpet pile and adds more comfort underfoot. Find out more on underlay in one of our previous blogs.

Experience the comfort and quality beneath your feet in our expansive flooring departments, which showcase an endless selection of carpets, rugs, wood and laminate floors to cater for any style of home.

Light It Up

Getting the right lighting is important, not only for your eyes, but also for creating the right ambience; comforting, welcoming and serene.

Help set the mood with lights that will enhance the ambience of your home, from something subtle and traditional to the more distinctive and contemporary.

From delicate pendant lights to bold statement table lamps, good lighting sets the tone for a room.

Simple reading lamps, wall mounted and floor standing lamps are great solutions for a space that does not have much natural light.

Wall lights are excellent if you don’t want to take up room on a side table or floor space.

A table lamp with a flexi arm, so that it can be positioned where you want it, can focus the light on your book.

Another option to consider is lanterns and candle holders or tealights. These smaller accessories can work with the colour schemes chosen within your soft furnishings.

Choose warm bulbs like vintage filament bulbs in amber to add a cosy glow.
