how to clean a microfibre sofa
How to Clean a Microfibre Sofa
1. Check the care tag first
Look for the cleaning code under the cushions or on the frame:
- W: water-based cleaners are fine
- S: solvent-based only (use a dry-cleaning solvent or isopropyl alcohol; no water)
- WS: either works
- X: vacuum only; call a professional for anything else
2. Vacuum thoroughly
Use the upholstery attachment on the seats, arms, and back, and a crevice tool in the seams. Remove cushions and vacuum underneath. Brush with a soft brush to lift flattened fibres and loosen dust.
3. Deal with stains
- W or WS fabric: Mix a few drops of washing-up liquid with warm water. Dab (don't rub) the stain with a clean white cloth, then blot with a cloth dampened with plain water to remove soap residue.
- S fabric, or tougher stains: Put rubbing alcohol (isopropyl, 70% or higher) in a spray bottle, mist the stain lightly, and blot with a white cloth.
- Always test on a hidden spot first, such as the back or under a cushion.
4. Clean the whole sofa (optional, every few months)
Lightly mist the whole surface with isopropyl alcohol or your soapy solution (W/WS only for the latter), then scrub gently in sections with a soft-bristled brush or white cloth. Don't soak it; microfibre should only be slightly damp.
5. Let it dry and restore the texture
Dry in a ventilated room, using a fan if needed, and avoid direct heat or sun. Once dry, brush with a soft brush or clean dry cloth to restore the nap and soften any stiffness. Sprinkling a little bicarbonate of soda and vacuuming it up after 20 to 30 minutes helps with odours.
Tips
- Use white cloths so dye doesn't transfer to the fabric.
- Don't over-wet, as it can leave water rings. If one appears, lightly mist the area and blot with a dry cloth.
- Tackle spills quickly by blotting, not rubbing.
- Vacuum weekly to keep dirt from working into the fibres.
If the sofa is heavily soiled or carries an X code, a professional upholstery cleaner is the safest option.
